System/Network Administrator

In charge of server & network administration for www.veoda.com and responsible for the design and implementation of a load balanced web server farm and company email services.


• Remotely administrated Veoda's Redhat Enterprise servers hosted by Rackspace. Designed the partition scheme and file system types on four new 64 bit servers. Corrected several dependency issues and installed custom software without corrupting the main operating system.
• Upgraded the existing infrastructure to a load balanced server farm utilizing Lighttpd, One Lighttpd server was configured as a load balancer and proxy server. The web servers are optimized utilizing FastCGI, controlling the expiration of content in caches and output compression.
• Custom built PHP to suit the development team's requirements and enabled FastCGI. The installation included a customized php.ini file and the GeoIP PECL module.
• Installed and configured eAccelerator to boost PHP performance.
• Managed their external DNS and created an internal (split) DNS infrastructure.
• Managed Veoda's Zimbra mail system.
• Installed and configured Subversion for Veoda's web site code and their system configuration files. Configured Apache to allow internal SSL web access to the repository. Train members of the development team on using Eclipse to connect to Subversion.
• Installed, configured and administrated Veoda's Trac web site. Trac is a web-based software project management and bug/issue tracking system. It provides an interface to Subversion and an integrated wiki. Documented installation, configuration and server/network procedures in Trac's wiki.
• Created several customized scripts to automate web processes such a shell script to update all the web servers content via RSync over SSH, a web-based PHP script to update the test website with the latest from the Subversion repository and a Perl script that generates and emails monthly AWStats reports.
• Configured and currently host Cacti to graph and monitoring Veoda's servers and network devices. Created an automatic monthly report of system/network performance in PDF format.
• Work with Rackspace on migrating from their existing PIX firewall to the Cisco ASA5505. Ensured developers VPN access, proper port access and remote TCP logging.
• Migrated the systems to Syslog-NG to for enhanced logging. Worked with development team to provide web to syslog logging of web and mobile searches. Searches are log on each individual server, logged remotely on a centralized server and then inputted to a MySQL database.
• Installed and configured AWStats for advanced web & mail server traffic statistics. Customized AWStats by utilizing Extra Sections to create Top Web & Mobile Searches columns. The process is automated via cron jobs that call scripts that use RSync of SSH to transfer the logs to a central server, update AWStats and create & email a monthly report in PDF format utilizing HTMLDOC.
• Administrated MySQL database for the web servers. Configured MySQL to allow remote connections and utilized internal DNS for private network connections.

• Automated the online and phone customer signup by providing secure communication between the Platypus Customer Database (Windows 2000, SQL Server) and e-mail server (RedHat 7.2 & Sendmail) for the creation of email accounts. This secure connection runs customized Perl scripts to validate & create email accounts and send Welcome email to newly create users.
• Completed the transfer & currently administrating the MinistryTec, MinistryCentral and Peragis web sites. Constructed the server utilizing Windows 2000 Server and SQL Server.
