Description : Co-payment (also called co-payment or co-insurance) is the portion of the total price of the prescription claim that is paid for by the patient. The co-payment is the mechanism that allows the member and the client to share the drug cost on a per prescription basis. Co-payment is also a mechanism that can provide an immediate financial incentive that may motivate specific behavior on the part of the patient or the member. For example, if the patient has a choice between a Brand drug that has a higher co-payment than the therapeutically equivalent Generic drug it may motivate the patient to consider the Generic alternative. Specific co-payments are designed to motivate different behavior. These behaviors and the associated co-payments are designed to support the requirements of the client.
