PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
FREELANCE I have recently been engaged in freelance web site design, development and maintenance.
OFFICE OF THE MAYOR, NEW YORK CITY I was initially hired to do mentoring and software evaluation. In the move from multiple isolated ACCESS databases and EXCEL spreadsheets to an integrated systems approach, I was responsible for evaluating application servers, programming IDE's and modeling tools, and for making software recommendations. I taught internal classes in modeling, object-oriented design, and Java. As an evaluator, I initiated the move first toward Java, and then away from SilverStream's proprietary RAD development tool, towards the Open Source J2EE/JSP technology. As a programmer, I developed the Mayor's email system as a forms-based Java application running on the SilverStream Application Server, and converted it to an open-source web-based J2EE/JSP application.
MED-USA Designed and programmed Order Entry, Shipping and Order Tracking systems for an international food Importer using POWERBUILDER, MICROSOFT EXCEL and SQL Anywhere/ODBC. This included building a client information facility (CIF), invoicing, and integration with A/R. The system was deployed in a browser for Internet access to online shipment tracking information.
BANK OF NEW YORK Was on the development team that built ADMINISTATION 2.0, a multi-product Trade Entry Workstation, deployed on the bank's Intranet using 3-tiered distributed architecture. The front-end was downloaded into a browser using Powersoft's Web-PB and Windows plugin. The back-end was SYBASE SQL/Server. The Business Application Objects (BOAs) were developed as NOVs, residing on a middle tier on an NT server. UNIX demons polled the applications for new transactions, routing them to mainframes in NY and Brussels for further processing. This required detailed knowledge of the PFC (PowerBuilder Foundation Classes), which had to be stripped out of the existing system and have their functionality rewritten for the new distributed platform. This also included converting TPFX, a Foreign Exchange Transaction Processing system from VISUAL BASIC to POWERBUILDER. The business logic, which resided in stored procedures, was converted to reside on the middle tier.
WBAI 99.5FM Was responsible for the development and maintenance of WBAI's web site, which resided on a UNIX APACHE server. Responsibilities included facilities planning, administration and site maintenance, as well as design and creation of web pages, and assisting and tutoring others.
NYC DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT (DOE) Responsibilities included systems analysis, programming and installation of the DOE Budget and Fiscal System and the Post Program Follow-up (PPFU) Statistical Survey System. Both were client/server projects using a PowerBuilder 4.0 front-end and SQL Server back-end. Used Erwin for system design, and Microsoft Project. The Budget and Fiscal System allowed outside contractors to dial into DOE to view their contracts and budgets, and prepare and submit their Project Operating Plans and monthly expenditures.
US TRUST/CHASE MANHATTAN Participated in the design and programming of CHAMP (Chase Asset Management Protection), a Portfolio Tracking System for Institutional Asset Management, which provided outside clients with the ability to access their financial data via dialup or leased line. A Windows GUI interface allowed clients to initiate ad hoc queries, and navigate and drill down through custom reports to obtain account information, which included Positions (trade date/settlement date), Holdings (inventory), Cash Management, Performance Analysis, and Transaction History. I was also responsible for the subsystem that captured information from real-time feeds, and posted transactions to a DB2 database for On-line Cash Management (real-time pending and settled cash balances, and cash 5-day projections). The system was architected using object oriented design methodology (BOA), and written in POWERBUILDER 4.0, exploiting PB's object oriented features of Inheritance, Encapsulation and Polymorphism, to achieve maximum reusability. Both MDI Gateway and DDCS were used to access the data from mainframe DB2 databases.
NEW YORK CITY HOUSING AUTHORITY (NYCHA) Was project leader on a team of four in the implementation of Emergency Services System (ESS), an on-line real-time emergency dispatching system for housing developments run by the city agency, which included creation and dispatch of work tickets, ad-hoc team assignment, elevator emergency subsystem, employee scheduling and project data MIS reporting. This was written in COBOL/CICS with VSAM files as the backend.
CITIBANK, PRIVATE BANKING GROUP Performed QA (Quality Assurance) Testing for a forms-based transaction workstation for private bankers. The client/server workstation allowed a banker to perform financial service transactions, such as applying internal transfers, wire transfers, and loan payments, and to move through the various levels of authorization required. The system was developed in Windows/C running on PCs on a Novell LAN, communicating to Hogan databases running under CICS. I wrote the test plans and procedures, created and executed the test cases (using the automated test tool AUTOTESTER), performed regression testing, and assisted the user through UAT (User Acceptance Testing).
CHEMICAL BANK, RETAIL CUSTOMER SERVICE Programmed One-Stop, a system that provided access to multiple customer service applications under one umbrella (i.e. cash management, card management, loans, mortgages). This required front-end customization for each branch, and changes to the back-end IMS interface. I also enhanced the major communication modules with the additional formatting, routing and error checking needed for the new functionality. On my nights to test, all tests went through without a hitch, which they said was "a first" at the bank!
SHEARSON LEHMAN BROTHERS BROKERAGE FIRM Worked in Retail Customer Statements, an on-line customer service system for handling customer complaints on their 1099 forms.
MANUFACTURERS HANOVER TRUST As part of the Testing Support Team, provided application support for COBOL, JCL, CICS, SCRIPT/VS applications and performed QA testing. I developed internal support tools under ISPF using Dialog Manager Service panels, CLISTs and Edit Macros. I also designed and programmed a Regression Analysis tool, which ran under CICS and provided an automated comparison facility for IBM's TPNS (Teleprocessing NetworkSimulator). The suite of six programs allowed programmers to regression-test applications that had been captured by TPNS scripts, and it provided an automated comparison of differences between test runs.
CHASE MANHATTAN BANK Worked on the team that converted a Credit Union loan system from Datapoint's proprietary software to CICS/COBOL, using CICS Inter System Communication (ISC).
ISRAEL DISCOUNT BANK As project leader, installed and front-ended a CIF (Customer Information Facility), which involved customizing a software package to provide the special functionality needed for the automation of the bank's manual "customer blue card" files. Duties included project management, detail design, programming, all phases of testing, documentation and end-user training.
HOLLAND AMERICA CRUISE LINES As Manager of Systems & Programming, managed a group of five employees and five consultants, during the conversion of HAC's manual reservation system to the new EBS (Electronic Berthing System). This involved heavy user interface, system analysis, design and programming, as well as personnel management. I was in charge of both systems and applications programming.
