Symantec Corporation, Waltham, MA (2001 - 2006) [$5B annual revenues from Security and Storage Management Software] ON Technology acquired by Symantec February, 2004 Vice President, Product Delivery and Response Recruited by the ON CEO to improve product delivery. At Symantec, reported to the Division VP and provided leadership to 64-person global (U.S., Europe, and India) software development team that designed and implemented an enterprise-class software deployment and configuration management product line. $6M budget. • Expanded the capabilities of the Boston / Munich team, increasing headcount by 24 at a cost of 9, by outsourcing to India. Developed a helpful and effective multi-level relationship with MindTree in Bangalore by building a strong, trusting partnership. • Delivered three (one brand-new) products on schedule, resulting in increased revenues, despite the distractions of integrating the ON development team into Symantec processes. • Improved product quality and added critical features without increasing budget; increased development productivity by means of clear communications and structure. ON's revenues doubled to $40M in 2 years, increasing Symantec's interest in making the $100M+ acquisition.
Nortel Networks, Chelmsford, MA (1998 - 2001) [$20B annual revenues from Data Communications and Networking systems] EPiCON acquired by Nortel Networks September, 2000 Vice President, Product Development Recruited by the CEO to revitalize the start-up engineering team and ensure the reliability of the delivered product. Grew headcount by 10 to 35 and lead the team that built Application Service Provider (ASP) infrastructure software that deploys, installs, repairs, and removes Windows applications onto/from PCs across the Internet. $4M Budget. • Reinforced M&A efforts with a reliable product, transforming an OEM relationship with Nortel Networks into a $300M acquisition. • Based on a new managed service provider direction, planned and delivered the ASP product (new Web UI, consistent architecture, formal quality assurance and testing, and online documentation) that attracted Nortel and its competitors, while satisfying requirements of an installed base (Citrix OEM).
DATA RACE, Inc., San Antonio, TX (1996- 1998) [$20M annual revenues from remote corporate telephony systems, custom modems, and multiplexers] Vice President, Product Development Recruited by the CEO to join management team, provide technical and business leadership to 45 engineers to transform a unique, innovative prototype into a market-ready data/telephony remote access product providing virtual office presence. Carefully monitored early adopters and market feedback to determine technological direction. $4M budget. • Identified the business opportunity and leveraged own industry contacts and participated in strategic partnership discussions with several major networking and telecommunications industry players for potential acquisition. • Advocated new product architecture based on the emerging Voice over IP (VoIP) Internet standard; gained corporate consensus for a new product vision and strategy evolving the original product to one that was based on VoIP.
CenterLine Software, Inc., Cambridge, MA (1995- 1996) [$20M annual revenues from cross-platform UNIX software development platform and testing systems] Vice President, Development Reporting to the CEO, lead and managed engineering and customer support resources that develop and support cross-platform C and C++ program development and testing tools for the UNIX market. $5M Budget. • Integrated and leveraged synergy from newly-acquired Veritas engineering resources -- unified product strategy and coalesced development processes, improving development efficiency and communication. • Reorganized development and support to improve customer satisfaction with more timely maintenance releases.
Proteon, Inc., Westborough, MA (1992 -- 1995) [$85M annual revenues from Routers, Multiplexers, and Token Ring adapters] Vice President & General Manager, LAN Products Division Reporting to acting CEO and the Board, directly managed engineering and marketing resources, administering P&L for $50M PC LAN adapter business unit. Matrix managed two-tier distribution system sales team. $3M Budget. • Prepared and positioned the LAN division for sale based on CEO's desire to sharpen focus in routers that resulted in an offer to purchase both technology and team from a major computer company. Chairman of the Board rejected the offer at the last minute. • Created and implemented competitive business model and drove LAN business to independent (from internetworking business) and profitable operations. • Executed business turnaround with a small development and marketing team and regained market visibility by launching new, revamped Token Ring adapter product line.
Wang Laboratories, Inc., Lowell, MA (1982 - 1992) [$2.8B annual revenues from minicomputers and imaging and office automation systems] Vice President, Government Applications Engineering (1990 -- 1992) Reporting to Executive VP, created a new, R&D-based, customer-focused team to re-engineer Wang from a traditional manufacturer of minicomputers into a business-process re-engineering, imaging solution oriented-, and services vendor. With a staff of 50 and $8M budget, lead and managed successful state, local, federal, and international government market program. • Maintained stable revenue stream for government market sector against a backdrop of dramatically-declining corporate revenues.
Vice President, Communications Systems Development (1986 -- 1989) Reporting to Exec.VP of R&D, lead a staff of 420 with a $45M budget to develop a new open standards strategy and to manage hardware and software development, product management, and quality assurance to deliver IBM SNA, TCP/IP, OSI, LAN integration, and network management products. • Lead the transformation of Wang from a proprietary vendor to an industry-recognized “open systems” communications vendor
