Looking for full time, part time, contract, or start-up position in anything from basic research to hands-on engineering
I like working in an environment where people are optimistic, excited about what they are doing and proud of their products.
I am interested in robotics (especially the challenge of making something respond intelligently to its environment), finding ways to use sensor feedback to effectively control complicated or unstable systems, signal processing, video game physics, looking for patterns in complex data sets, quantum information processing, finding ways to translate the results of human intuition into algorithmic form, new energy production and storage technologies, and just about anything which experts have stated is impractical or impossible.
Skills:
* Undergraduate Physics & Math * Mathematica: 5 years academic (including a computational physics course, 2D simulation of SR paradoxes, numerical computation for thesis) and lots of hobby projects since then. This is what I usually use when testing new ideas, though lately I have been drifting towards Python. * Pascal: 1 year academic * Forth: 2 years academic (for instrument control in thesis) * C: 3 years professionally for firmware programming. * C++: 1 year professionally in Borland Visual Developer environment. * Labview: 5 years professionally * Excel: 7 years professionally * Visual Basic: 1 year professionally (with Microsoft Visual Studio) * Non-professional experience with Solidworks(a CAD program), Java, c# (in Visual Studio .NET), and Python * Any other programming language: tell me what it is and I'll learn it before I start work then pretend I knew it all along * Mechanical design and some electrical circuit design: 7 years professionally * Experience both academically and professionally in setting up experiments, data collection & analysis, and presenting the results to others. * Proficient with multi-meter, oscilloscope, PC DAQ devices (electronic chart recorders), solder gun, dremel tool, lock-in amplifier * Fire Poi: 5 years experience
Education:
New College, FL from 1996 to 2001
Thesis: "Coil Impedance In the Presence of an Axially Symmetric Conductor" Used Forth programming language to control function generators and collect data via a lock-in amplifier. Analyzed data and made numerical calculations with Mathematica.
Summer research job in 1999 leading to paper: Brian Avants, Dustin Soodak, and George Ruppeiner, “Measuring the electrical conductivity of the earth,” Am. J. Phys., 67, (7), 593-598 (1999).
Putnam exam: 11
New College Extracurricular: Physics club, Abstract Algebra Retreat
Post-Academic Work Experience:
World Precision Instruments (WPI): 1/10/2002 to 7/30/2009
Salary: 46k
Experience with electrochemical sensors, Ag/KCl electrodes, PID control. Designed and tested a variety of products related to medical research including a micropipette beveller, an 8 way microfluidic junction, Ussing chambers, TEER electrodes & calibration cell, and CO2, humidity, and temperature control systems (for microscope stage incubation studies).
Programming projects at work:
* Software (Labview) for an automated (robotic) tissue resistance measurement system(REMS) * Firmware (ATMEGA microcontroller to control DAC, LCD screen, Serial Com) for a four channel microstepping syringe pump controller with serial interface (UMC). * Firmware (ATMEGA microcontroller to control ADC, DAC, GLCD screen, USB) & software (PC interface in Labview) for a 4 channel 8 wavelength LED Spectrometer (LEDSpec) * Visual Basic program for communicating with a variety of digital micrometers & calipers (SPG-KIT) * Microsoft Excel workbook (with custom macros) made for simulating the flow of electrical current in a radially symmetric chamber for the purpose of determining an optimal electrode shape for measuring electrical resistance across cell membranes. * Updating the software for a 4 channel NO sensing system (Visual C++ Builder).
Upon request, I can provide electronic copies of my thesis and the published paper mentioned above. I also have a letter of recommendation from the CEO of WPI.
