Academic Projects
RS485 communication system using PIC18F4520
• Built an RS-485 based bidirectional communication system between several nodes at a data rate of 19200 baud. The RS-485 peripheral transceiver was built based on the PIC18F4520 microcontroller. The transceiver will extract information from the asynchronous data stream and will control one or more devices. It will send acknowledgements back to the PC over the RS-485 physical layer to indicate successful receipt of the data. The transceiver will also send unsolicited messages back to the PC in response to input from connected devices.
Multitasking RTOS for PIC18F4520 Microcontroller
• Implemented a multitasking real time operating system (RTOS) on the PIC18F4520 microcontroller using both cooperative and preemptive multitasking. Also a boot loader was programmed into the chip to facilitate programming through the RS-232 serial port. The project was done mostly in PIC C and assembly language.
CNC cutting machine using PIC18F4520
• A 3-axis CNC cutting machine with 1mil accuracy was built based on PIC18F8722 microcontroller. A simple Ethernet protocol was implemented on the system based on the RTL8019AS chip. It was able to handle simple file operations through Ethernet, and functions like DHCP and NetBIOS. In order to store the files on the CNC machine, a simple file system was built on an EEPROM chip (24AA1025). An onboard GUI display was also implemented which can display the g-files (standard CNC file) and the various status and error messages. The GUI part was built around a PIC18F4520 microcontroller and it was connected to the main processer using an RS485 communication link. All the necessary manual controls for the machine were also provided through the RS485 bus.
4 - Way Traffic Light Controller on Xilinx Spartan III FPGA
• Designed a traffic light controller for a crossroad consisting of a major road and a minor road. Sensors were used to sense vehicles waiting under the stop signal and pedestrian switches were provided for reducing the waiting time. The design was implemented in VHDL and tested on a Xilinx Spartan III FPGA board.

RF power Amplifier using Agilent ADS
• Designed a Class-A RF power amplifier for specified power gain and stability in the specified frequency range with the help of Agilent ADS. The project involved biasing of the transistor, stabilization of the amplifier using a feed back element, impedance matching of the input and output sides for maximum power transfer over the given bandwidth and noise figure measurement of the circuit.
System-Level Design for a Mobile Wireless User Terminal in MATLAB
• Designed a simulation reference system for GPDCH subject to Rician flat fading using MATLAB and designed a demodulator for such a fading channel with QPSK modulation. Block phase estimation as well as maximum ratio combining was used at the receiver and performance analysis graphs were plotted for different Doppler frequencies and various Rican fading factors.
Simulation of a Digital Communication System in MATLAB
• Designed a physical layer simulation reference system for a digital communication system using MATLAB. Designed a channel equalizer for a multi-path channel (introducing inter symbol interferences) with BPSK modulation. Performance analysis graphs were plotted in the presence and absence of a block coding scheme for different timing errors.
Mobile Ambient Condition Data Acquisition Remote Platform
• Developed a robotic platform controlled and monitored wirelessly from a computer. Multiple onboard sensors for monitoring ambient conditions and sensing obstacles were implemented. Two-way communications between the control terminal and the mobile platform was established through 433MHz ASK modulated radio channels and a simple gating technique.
Advanced Automobile Performance & Usability Information Interface
• Designed and developed a system capable of improving the usability of an automobile by providing safety parameters and status information coupled with parking assistance on an LCD graphics display along with audio warning. The system can record abnormal happenings onto a flash memory for future analysis. The system was built on an Intel Strong ARM (SA1110) processor with embedded Linux loaded in it. The coding was done entirely in C.

Achievements
• Active IEEE member for the last 6 years
• Graduate Dean Master's Fellow from Fall 2005 semester at the University of Texas at Arlington
• Received award from the IEEE international president in January 2005, for services done as a student volunteer (Kerala Section, India, Region 10)
• National Second prize winner for ISTE (Indian Society for Technical Education) project contest at JNTU (Jawaharlal Nehru Technical University) in October 2003, Hyderabad, India
• Third prize winner for Cyberfest 2001 (South India Level Technical Festival), Kerala, India
