Project Leader of Photovoltaic Division for Pilot Scale Production and Technology Transfer to Commercial Scale Manufacturing

REPORTING TO VICE PRESIDENT OF PHOTOVOLTAIC DIVISION AND DIRECTOR OF NEW MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT

Orchestrated solar cell commercial production in Asia by effectively managing a team of 5 researchers and 4 engineers. Oversaw projects determining organic, inorganic, metallo-organic, and nano materials synthesis and the fabrication, testing and manufacturing of photovoltaic. Conducted primary research on chemicals and materials aspects for solar cell applications. Collaborated with international branches of Toyota and its subsidiaries in Japan, Switzerland, France, and India.

Operational Highlights:
* Successfully worked on commercialization of organic solar cells (DSSC)
manufacturing with a potential market size of USD1 billion annually by
effectively using lean manufacturing techniques.
* Coordinated and facilitated in technology & process transfer to Aisin-Seiki for
full scale production of 2.5x 2.5 m2 solar panels, Toyota home application,
with a potential market of USD 500 million.
* Created a 20-person USD 1 million research facility for the synthesis of
organic and inorganic molecules and the development of nano materials for
robustness, reliability and life time testing of solar cell.
* Coordinated with highly structured international team, EPFL-Switzerland,
Aisin-IMRA-France, TCRDL-Japan,Aisin-Japan,IICT-India and cross functional
team, engineers, product development team, supply chain and operations
team for fabrication, testing and manufacturing of solar cell.
* Managed different international suppliers of equipment manufactures to
procure solar fabrication and testing equipments worth of USD 2 Million.
* Conducted life time testing, by analyzing IPCE & IV spectral response, Voc,
Isc, Jsc, FF, * and analyzed the factors influencing these properties, to
establish SOP & GMP.
* Enhanced cell efficiency from 5% to 11% by developing a novel cell
fabrication technique, which reduce the cost by 1/3 rd per KWH, by
implementing KIZEN approach.
* Demonstrated and fabricated flexible solar cell for portable electronic
devices application, like cellular phone, lap tops etc., with a potential market
size of USD 200 million annually.
* Simulated the reliability and life time testing of solar cell, under Ultra Violet,
Infra Red, Visible Light and 1 Sun (real) for 1000 Hours, using NREL
standardized reference cell under Standard Test Condition (STC),
temperature (25OC), irradiance (1000 W/m2), air mass (AM1.5).
* Handled design and fabrication of different sizes of solar cells, 0.25 cm2,
1x1cm2, 10x10cm2, 1x 1 m2, to study reliability and durability under NREL
standardized solar simulator and out door testing under 1 real sun for 1000
hours.
* Trained engineers in fabrication, testing and efficiency enhancement of solar
cells for roof top automotive application.
* Documented solar cell fabrication technique and Standard Operating
Procedure (SOP) of various processes and equipments in accordance to Aisin
(ISO14001, 9000/QS9000, 9001, 9002, ISO/TS 16949), NREL standards for
its reproducibility.
* Implemented SPC to avoid the variation in efficiency and designed
experiments based on these results.

Scientific Achievements:
* Standardized solar cell fabrication by using screen printing coating for
optimum thickness and controlled sintering to obtain uniform nano texture
and curing under a controlled atmosphere.
* Prepared nano (2-4nm) TiO2 solution for compact layer to avoid shorting
and challenging effect in nano textured organic solar cells and to avoid
recombination of electrons.
* Enhanced longevity of solar cells 2 years by synthesizing polymer gel
electrolyte with nano fillers used in Toyota Dream House project at Expo
2005 in Japan.
* Synthesized low sintering nano (9-25nm) TiO2 for flexible solar cells and
Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) application.
* Developed efficient polymer gel electrolyte currently used in flexible solar
cells.
* Increased product offering to a wide variety of electronics applications by
synthesizing low temperature sintering nano TiO2 with semi conducting
properties.
