Technical Writer/Information Developer/Trainer

Experienced information developer producing quality documentation for various software and hardware products including driver development applications. Deliverables have included user manuals, administrator manuals, installation manuals, reference manuals, and database process control documentation (including Disaster Recovery checklists) published as print, PDF, and/or HTML documents, as well as application/product help delivered as either HTML Help or WinHelp. Other professional assignments have required creating user manuals for Global Risk Management systems, training in-house personnel to use/maintain new or current systems, developing high-technology courseware and conducting train-the-trainer classes at various CONUS locations including military bases.

09/2008 to Present - Information Developer, under contract to MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Lexington, MA. Created several Software Design Documents, including Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams, for a sophisticated medium-fidelity simulation under development. Also served as group data lead, interfacing with DMS and contractors to obtain data needed for algorithmic design and analysis. Used UNIX-based SGI FUEL computer and MATLAB to analyze event phenomenology for sponsor`s research projects. Performed other duties as required by management.

02/2008 to 09/2008 - Consulting Information Developer. Operating from my home office (frequently as a solo tech writer and with on-site visits as required), worked freelance on various client projects. Authoring tools used included Adobe FrameMaker 7.2, Adobe Creative Suite 7.0, Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional. Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 and Microsoft Word 2007.

11/2007 to 02/2008 - Senior Technical Writer/Trainer, under contract to Pioneer Investments, Inc., Boston, MA. Most recent assignment required re-writing two global Risk Management software user manuals as part of an international agile development process, developing Microsoft Word templates for future software manuals, and training internal personnel to create and maintain future documentation. All documentation and templates were placed on the corporate Microsoft SharePoint for collaborative usage. Project was completed on time and under budget.

05/2007 to 11/2007 - Technical Writer/Trainer, under contract to BAE Systems, Inc., Nashua, NH. Collected data for, organized, authored, edited, and produced technical documentation, training support packages, student guides, and course curriculum. Created a complete courseware package to support a prototype fixed-wing aircraft systems integration project. Package consisted of nine PowerPoint slide presentations as well as a Training Support Package (TSP) with comprehensive tests. Conducted train-the-trainer classes at various CONUS locations including military bases. Received commendation from government sponsor for this project. Authoring tools used for this project included Adobe FrameMaker 7.2, Adobe Creative Suite 7.0, Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional, Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 and Microsoft Word 2007.

05/2005 to 01/2006 - Information Developer, under contract to Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, Portsmouth, NH. Telecommuting from my home office (with weekly on-site visits), developed over 200 Database Process Control Checklists in Microsoft Word (including Disaster Recovery checklists) for the 11 databases supported by Liberty Mutual DBAs:
* Identified typical repeatable database administration changes
* Developed a checklist template in Microsoft Word specifically for the Database Management Engineering group
* Worked remotely with SMEs (subject matter experts) to develop checklists when travel to their sites was not feasible
Assignment was completed on time and within budget.

11/2004 to 05/2005 - Consulting Information Developer. Operating from my home office (with on-site visits as required), worked freelance on various client projects. Authoring tools included Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word.

10/2000 to 11/2004 - Information Developer, Compuware Corporation, NuMega Lab, Nashua, NH. Lead Writer for the Compuware/NuMega DriverStudio and SoftICE Driver Suite Ring 0 applications. Produced printed, PDF, and online documentation for these products (using Adobe FrameMaker), as well as stand-alone and context-sensitive Help (using Macromedia RoboHelp). Used HTML to create and edit over 350 rule explanations for the DevPartner SecurityChecker online Help. Created a CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) for an XML-based SecurityChecker Rules Manager. Authored a CMM (Capability Maturity Model for Software) white paper on software project management techniques. Worked with Product Management to produce marketing white papers and product positioning documents. Used various authoring tools (including Adobe FrameMaker, Macromedia RoboHelp and Microsoft Word) to efficiently and effectively complete projects on time and within budget.

03/1991 to 10/2000 - Senior Technical Writer, Simplex Time Recorder Company, Gardner and Westminster, MA. Group Leader for Fire Alarm System publications. Worked closely with engineers as well as other technical personnel to schedule and design product documentation sets. Used Microsoft Project to ensure that documentation was produced correctly, on time and within budget. Developed Help Systems for Windows-based software using RoboHelp. Created and edited hardware and software documentation using Adobe FrameMaker and Microsoft Word. Developed and taught a variety of technical courses to customer service engineers.

05/1989 to 11/1990 - Product Manager, Aviation Simulation Technology, Inc., Bedford, MA. Responsible for product management of complete product line of AST-201, AST-300, and Turbo-Jet Flight Simulators. Duties included marketing flight-training simulators and managing the navigational PROM development operation. Also responsible for maintaining TurboPascal source code for the simulators.

11/1988 to 05/1989 - Senior Technical Writer, under contract to TRW Defense Systems, Lexington, MA. Responsible for user manuals based on the ORACLE Relational Database.

03/1988 to 11/1988 - Programmer/Writer, under contract to Interactive Data Corporation, Lexington, MA. Responsible for MarketPlus Programmer's Reference Manual sections on language dependencies, data access, and VMS/VAX system administration. Revised IBM System 370-based demonstration programs in FORTRAN 77, COBOL and PL/1. Ported these programs to DEC VAX environment.

01/1987 to 03/1988 - Senior Engineering Writer, under contract to Computer Systems Engineering Group, Aircraft Instruments Dept., General Electric Company, Wilmington, MA. Documented the Engine Analyzer Unit (EAU) for the T56-A-427 engine to DOD-STD-2167. Previously documented V-22 Osprey Engine Monitoring System/Test Cell Adapter (EMS/TCA) to DOD-STD-2167.

10/1986 to 01/1987 - Software Quality Assurance Engineer, under contract to Process Computer Engineering Dept., Northeast Utilities, Berlin, CT. Developed and documented software and hardware QA procedures for nuclear power plant computers. Tasks required knowledge of nuclear power plant operations as well as IBM 4341/4381 and DEC VAX 8600 computers.

08/1986 to 10/1986 - Senior Engineering Writer, under contract to Stratus Computer, Inc., Marlboro, MA. Wrote hardware engineering specification for a Motorola 68008-based SMD disk controller.

03/1985 to 08/1986 - Senior Technical Writer, under contract to Raytheon Company, Equipment Division, Sudbury, MA. Attached to Software Development Facility. Documented NESP program per MIL-STD-483, MIL-STD-490-2 and DOD-STD-1679A. Also responsible for writing ROTHR User Manual.

11/1984 to 03/1985 - Technical Publications Project Manager, Data Communication, Inc., Melville, NY. Assigned to IBM Federal Systems Division, Owego, NY, as on-site Publications Manager for Data Communication, Inc. Developed a pilot operating handbook for a unique glass-cockpit rotary-wing aircraft under USAF contract.

02/1966 to 11/1984 - Various engineering, field engineering, training and writing projects. Details upon request.

02/1962 to 02/1966 - Airborne Electronic Navigation Equipment Repairman, United States Air Force. Performed both aircraft and Depot-Level Maintenance on airborne electronic navigation equipment which included TACAN, ILS, IFF, DOPPLER and ADF navigation equipment. Performed aircraft navigation system checks. Instructed civilian DoD (Department of Defense) personnel in navigation equipment maintenance. Twice recommended by commanding officers for Officer Candidate School. HONORABLE discharge.
