Position Title: SQL Server DBA

Rapidly growing company in the financial industry is seeking a SQL Server DBA to join a database team of 8 individuals. Within the team, this person will be the go-to for the database administration, as those responsibilities are currently on the manager of the team. While this individual will work closely with the application development team as they push out weekly builds in an extreme programming environment, the database team which this individual will join includes a Database Developer, 3 report writers, 2 EDI developers, a contract indexing specialist, and the hiring manager (who is the sole DBA/Architect).

Company is currently running 3 instances of production SQL Server and has 4 QA/Development SQL Servers for their applications. Among the many projects that will be attacked in the near future are an upgrade of current systems to SQL 2008 and the introduction of Versioning software (DBGhost is being considered) environment is very heavy on OLTP applications with a wide dataset that requires tons of triggers and stored procedures. This individual needs to be an expert with the tuning and maintenance of the database and be prepared to break up databases, replicate them, and set up clusters.

The organization itself is primarily an open-source shop with the exception of the SQL Server. Application development is Java and candidates who have experience in UNIX environments, creating batch jobs, shell and Perl scripting, and even exposure to Oracle (though no Oracle is in-house now, the hiring manager has had experience as both an Oracle and SQL Server DBA) would be most ideal. This DBA needs to be cool under pressure as they will be helping to maintain a legacy application and must keep the databases up and running within the rapid, iterative application development environment and be prepared to think out of the box and “break-the-rules” of traditional database administration with the ultimate goal of creating a consistently available database.

Must-Haves:
- 5+ years of experience with Database Administration (majority within SQL Server environment)
o Strong with optimization and performance tuning
- Experience in an OLTP environment
- SQL Server upgrade experience (7/2000 -> 2005/2008)
- Deep understanding of TSQL: functions, indexes, stored procs, views, and triggers
- Ability to juggle multiple projects and maintain a coolness under pressure

Technical responsibilities will include:
- Performance Tuning/Optimization
- Database Architecture
- Change Control and Versioning
- Transactional or merge Replication
- Creating batch jobs, UNIX/Perl scripting
- Views, indexed and partitioned
- Clustering
- Writing index rules and Regular Expressions
- Query writing (joins/group by/etc)
- BONUS: MySQL experience (don't actively maintain, but do help out the infrastructure team from time to time on some MySQL databases)
