My client is looking for a "HANDS ON" Software Development Manager responsible for supervising and directing software development activities in the MIS department. You will be working in collaboration with the Managing Director of Applications Development and peer managers QA Manager, Support Manager, and Network Manager to analyze systems and software performance and make recommendations concerning software, upgrades and other resources to maintain pace with technological progress and business needs.


JOB DUTIES/KNOWLEDGE

Assesses and creates development processes that are the foundation for a good development environment. This includes continually re-assessing the processes to ensure the group builds the best quality product available in the most efficient way.

Creates or modifies existing processes to produce accurate design, good quality, measurable timelines, and proper development documentation.

Evaluates and selects development information systems to help build the proper infrastructure that would produce standard specifications, design diagrams, prototypes, object models, and database models.

Maintains a good working relationship with Project Management concerning product requirements, change requests, and project status.

Analyzes systems and software performance and makes recommendations concerning software, upgrades, and other resources to maintain pace with technological progress and business needs.

Makes recommendations concerning systems and programs which will make applications less complex and more efficient.

Ensures compatibility with systems, software, and programs.

Identifies and/or resolves programming problems in order to provide continuous business operations.

Achieves results, meets deadlines, and adjusts to quickly changing priorities in a fast paced development environment. Requires effective time management and organizational skills, and a thorough approach to problem solving.

Notifies Support Manager of scheduled system interruptions for repairs or upgrades timely to minimize disruption to business operations.

Selects, trains, and retains skilled staff necessary to meet fundamental requirements of this job.


Assigns tasks and responsibilities in a fair and reasonable manner.

Consults with and advises staff concerning work flow, deadlines, policies and procedures, problems/grievances, and interdepartmental relations.

Keeps up-to-date on the latest in software trends and development tools, and is a technical mentor to the group providing solutions and direction for high-level technical problems.

Responsible for compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Performs other duties as assigned to include work on special projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in computer science, related discipline or equivalent related job experience with a minimum of five (5) years of experience in software development.

Experience in Windows development, Client/Server database development, SQL, knowledge of QA processes, and modern development tools required.

Experience in all phases of the software lifecycle, successful production of software from start to finish, successful experience implementing development processes, experience with time/effort estimations, and large-scale projects with several Development/QA staff required.

Commitment to keeping abreast of technology and sharing that knowledge with others.

Experience with Microsoft tools, MS SQL Server, source control tools, defect tracking tools, Web-based technologies, experience with contract development, distributed computing technologies (CORBA, DCOM, Message-based systems) preferred.

Experience with healthcare information systems preferred.

Excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to work well within a team and project environment.

Ability to work under pressure on a number of different projects simultaneously.

Demonstrates ability to make decisions and judgments; attentive to details and assumes accountability for consequences of actions taken.
