Library Associates Companies (LAC) seeks an innovative and service-oriented Web Services Librarian to work at an academic library located in New Orleans, LA. The Web Services Librarian takes overall responsibility for the Library's main website, including oversight of content and design; plans future redesigns and innovations to the site; engages in usability testing and other assessments of the website; and coordinates and facilitates the development of access to web content and services from library departments. The librarian works closely with a Web Steering Committee comprised of representatives from units around the library, and supervises a full-time web programmer. This librarian also coordinates digitization projects library-wide, setting standards for the creation of content and metadata, and represents the library to other groups around campus and the region engaged in the creation of digital collections. Reporting to the Director of Public Services, the librarian shares reference duties with other librarians and participate in the library's instruction program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent required;
One year or more of post-MLS experience preferred;
Knowledge and experience with web design, metadata, and information architecture;
Web coding and programming experience such as PHP, JavaScript, XHTML, and CSS is required;
Experience with ColdFusion and/or CommonSpot content management system preferred;
Background in developing digital initiatives such as archival projects or database-backed dynamic websites;
Working knowledge of metadata standards such as Dublin Core as well as digital preservation standards;
Working knowledge of relevant Web 2.0 technologies for digital content delivery;
Skill in translating student and faculty needs into web functions;
Experience in assisting library users with online resources in an academic library;
Knowledge of current copyright and licensing issues;
Project management skills & potential for leadership in a collaborative setting;
Effective communication and teaching skills;
Enthusiasm for an innovative and changing environment;
Willingness to participate in professional development and in the shared governance of the library and the university.
Experience with library instruction, outreach, reference services and collection development in an academic library is preferred;
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work closely with the Web Steering Committee to plan, schedule, and supervise the development of the library's main website;
Supervise and evaluate staff members in charge of programming for the site as well as participate as a team member in the work of developing and maintaining the site;
Develop and coordinate web initiatives and digital library projects library-wide;
Represent the library to other groups on campus engaged in digitization and web development;
Follow the latest trends and new technologies in the field, and promote best practices for and innovations to the library's website;
Participate with other librarians and staff in providing general help and research assistance to library users;
May participate in in-person and/or virtual reference services as required;
Participates with other librarians in providing general library/internet instruction to undergraduate and graduate students through the Center for Library User Education (CLUE);
Assist with staff training and development on issues related to web development and digital libraries;
Develop expertise in emerging technologies, work well in teams, and lead and/or participate in new and innovative library projects;
Work cooperatively with staff and other librarians as well as with faculty, students, and other librarians at other libraries;
Contribute service to library committees and task forces as well as to professional associations.
