Position Summary
Volt Technical Resources is seeking a highly skilled and talented R&D Engineer to design and develop innovative products, product lines and custom components for the healthcare industry from concept to production in line with strategic goals and product roadmap. Manage projects as per established 'Custom Fitting Product Development Process' in support of the design center including co-ordination of the cross-functional team member activities to meet specified customer and corporate design, manufacturing and quality requirements. Create and maintain a positive working relationship with internal and OEM customers in the healthcare industry. Manage the activities and timelines of new product projects within the guidelines of company policies and product development procedures.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
•Design and develop innovative products from concept to production that provides sustained competitive advantage.
•Coordinates appropriate communications with customers to facilitate transfer of customer requirements and project acceptance.
•Combines broad knowledge of design skills, engineering principles, manufacturing techniques and analytical skills to create new products, which meet or exceed product requirements.
•Refines technical data received from marketing & sales, customers and manufacturing team members, conducts appropriate evaluation, and creates detailed project scope, schedule, product specifications and risk analysis as per New Product Development processes. Provides accurate and timely project status updates to appropriate personnel.
•Directs efforts of cross-functional team which is responsible for all aspects of launching new projects from concept to volume production. Coordinates regular status meetings with personnel as needed or requested.
•Work with internal and external stakeholders to implement strategies consistent with NPD and organizational growth objectives and core competencies.
•Develop detailed engineering drawings, fixtures and gages for new products using accepted tools.
•Utilize input from all departments from within company in the creation and implementation of Design FMEA, Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA). Assist the manufacturing engineer in the creation of Process FMEA.
•Creates appropriate project plan/documentation to adequately create a Design History Record (DHR) of all projects within the guidelines of company procedures and practices. Oversees the development and maintenance of appropriate work instructions and ISO procedures.
•Develop test protocols for internal or external use; design and build test equipment; and perform design validation resulting in products that meets customer, design and manufacturing requirements.
•Oversee the care and maintenance of the R&D work area, lab area and equipment.
•Recommend enhancements to New Product Development Manager concerning potential changes to engineering processes which ensure compliance with company Quality System and are in-line with appropriate GMP standards.
•Manage outside contract resources to ensure on-time delivery of quality products and/or services.
•Available on occasions to work on weekends, holidays and off-hours to support company requirements
Skills & Abilities
•Possess good interpersonal communication skills to interface with customers as well as sales, marketing, engineering, manufacturing and tooling departments. As such, adequate experience in working with customers is required.
•Knowledgeable of New Product Development stage-gate processes.
•Knowledgeable of Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) instituted by PMI.
•Strong experience in using fundamental engineering principles in the development of plastics part assembly design, tool design and high volume manufacturing processes such as injection molding is required. Must be able to interpret appropriate SPC (Statistical Process Control) tools.
•Knowledgeable of rapid prototyping methods to evaluate design and process requirements.
•Hold patents and knowledgeable of patenting processes.
•Experience designing and developing product form factors (HFID) in line with industry trends in aesthetics and ergonomics is highly desired.
•Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical information. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to customers, top management, or boards of directors.
•Must be able to read and interpret mechanical drawings, and understand the application of geometric tolerances. Must be able to use inspection devices (i.e. microscopes, calipers, gage pins, optical comparator, etc.)
•Knowledgeable of advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Knowledgeable of mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory and factor analysis.
•Possess good analytical and reasoning skills. Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
COMPUTER SKILLS
•Experience in use of one or more of these software tools (i.e. Solid Works, PDMWorks, Solid Edge, MS Project, Project Scheduler, and FEA Software such as COSMOS, Pro-E, and AutoCAD etc.) are required.
•Proficient in use of typical desktop hardware and software (i.e. Dell/Compaq, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). Must be able to use advanced functions in most standard office applications.
•Proficient in use and navigation of a Windows operating system in a networked environment.
•Upon completion of training, employee must be able to successfully navigate through VOXware (i.e. ERP Systems such as IFS, Oracle, and SAP) including proficiency in the Document Management, Project Management and Enterprise Management modules.
Physical Requirements
•While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use fingers to handle or feel and talk or hear.
•The employee is frequently required to stand; walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel or crouch.
•The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
•Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to read and interpret details on a computer screen, drawing, or a physical part often in multiple colors is required.
•Work in a manufacturing/tool room environment (i.e. coolants, metal chips, noise up to 80 db etc.), and manufacturing cells where plastic injection parts are produced (i.e. plastic dust, pneumatic pick & place robots, material grinders, etc.).
•May fluctuate work time from 90% at a computer work station to 90% in a lab or production environment. Requires frequent periods of time working in injection molding, assembly and tool room areas.
Qualifications
•A Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or a University in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline is required. M.S in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline is desired.
•A minimum of five years of experience in designing and manufacturing plastic injection molded products is required.
•Professional certifications in the field of engineering are desired.
•Familiarity with GMP medical design and manufacturing principles is desired.
