The Front End Web Developer (aka, User Interface Engineer) is responsible for the successful implementation of graphical user interfaces for company web sites. This role will require excellent practical skills in web development technologies as well as a good understanding of web site user interface design principles and practices.
Responsibilities Include:
• Produce and maintain clean, high quality, standards compliant code.
• Create templates based on graphical designs that adhere to design specification documents, conform to user interface style guides, follow brand guidelines and meet established usability standards.
• Implement cross-browser/cross-platform UI compatibility and troubleshoot associated issues.
• Maintain cutting edge knowledge of current and emerging technologies, industry trends and standards including, but not limited to, modern web browser capabilities, compatibility issues and behavior related to the use of different DOCTYPE declarations, character encoding, W3C standards compliance and accessibility issues.
• Work in close coordination with the Graphic Design and Product Design Teams to ensure that implementation is done in accordance to design specifications and that design specifications accommodate realistic technical parameters and constraints.
• Work in conjunction with other members of the Development Team to ensure successful implementation and integration of presentation tier with other tiers in multi-tier web-based applications and communicate technical parameters and constraints to relevant teams.
• Assist with planning and development of user interface for new web-based tools along with improvements to existing applications.
Your qualifications include:
• 5+ years of web UI implementation experience, with the last 2 years focused in implementing consumer web UI along with demonstrated achievements in implementing consumer web or related user interface.
• Technical mastery of client side web user interface development technologies including HTML/XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, DHTML and AJAX (ability to hand-code a must).
• Experience coding within a web template system or application framework including a working knowledge of each layer's uniqueness and the interaction between them.
• Knowledge of cross-browser/cross-platform compatibility including knowledge of and ability to solve common associated issues as well as investigate and troubleshoot complex inconsistencies.
• Understanding of standards based development and revision control systems including accessing and contributing to Subversion repositories (SVN).
• General UI background (Information architecture, site flow, accessibility, browser capabilities, etc.)
• Second-nature attitude toward HTTP, FTP, navigating and organizing image directories, server hierarchies and related technologies.
• Excellent analytical, problem solving and debugging skills.
• Experience with UNIX, Linux or equivalent system including secure shell or SSH.
• Good written and oral communication skills, and ability to work either independently or within a team environment.
Additional (desired) Skills:
• Intense passion for coding using the latest technologies.
• Knowledge of server side or back end languages such as Perl or Java are a plus.
• Strong visual design and communication skills will be considered an asset.
• Mastery of industry standard web graphics software such as Photoshop.
• Ability to export optimized images that balance size vs. visual quality and identifying the threshold.
• Exposure to relational database systems and experience with SQL, Perl and Apache including connectivity to the Front End as well as fundamental knowledge of stored procedures, table structures, comprehension of database queries and general server configuations.
• Fearless curiosity to "poke-around" pre-existing code, see what makes it tick and either refine it, simplify it, modify it or simply re-use it to meet new requirements.
• Interest in emerging technologies, but also comfortable and flexible with maturing technologies.
• Strong sense or knowledge of principles and practices of consumer web-based UI design along with awareness of user-centered design trends and usability practices highly desirable.
• Creative and curious mind with the ability to approach challenges from multiple points of view.
• Bachelor's Degree in a related field or relevant industry experience.
