Web Systems Administrator/Engineer
6 Months contract to hire role in Atlanta, GA
We are looking for a dependable, highly motivated, and adaptable Systems Administrator/Engineer. This team fully manages all facets of the web hosting
infrastructure and physical data center environment for 25+ newspaper websites.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Designs and uses monitoring tools to proactively maintain approximately 250 servers and network appliances.
Backs up file systems and plans for disaster recovery.
Evaluates systems specifications, input/output processes and working parameters for hardware/software compatibility.
Designs and codes small applications to support infrastructure (customer monitoring scripts, system administration automation, admin CGI scripts)
Troubleshoots networking, application, and operating system problems
Responds to alerts or problems by following appropriate problem management procedures (24-hour on-call rotation amongst team members).
Diagnoses and resolves moderate to complex technical problems in one or more operating system environments, network devices and multiple database
environments.
Works with senior staff to assist in the implementation of moderate to complex system software changes and is able to perform some aspects of upgrade
independently.
Prepares system change management plans, writes technical documentation and procedures
Maintains internal and customer access priveliges and passwords.
May perform other duties as assigned. Some travel may be required.
Weekly 24-hour on-call rotation, which requires 15-minute response-times to critical system issues. Employee's salary includes these off-hour work duties.
KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS:
B.S. degree in Computer Science or Information Systems (or equivalent experience) with 5 years of experience in a web-hosting environment preferred.
Accepting applications with all levels of experience.
Ideal candidate possesses the following technical skills:
Web hosting environment, ISP systems administration
PERL, shell or other system programming (moderate skills required, extensive preferred)
Apache implementation and customization
Solaris, HP-UX, Windows 2003 Server and SUSE Linux administration
Cisco and Foundry network engineering and maintenance
BEA Weblogic Application Server, Jboss, TomCat and Resin application server maintenance and administration
Escenic content management system
Familiarity with supporting database servers (running primarily Oracle but also use MySQL, Cache, and Sybase)
Additional technology skills used include: DNS (bind), sendmail, java, firewall/system security, static routes, Netbackup, SSL, SNMP, CVS/RCS/SVN
Ideal candidate possesses the following communication skills:
Excellent written and oral communications in a high stress and fast-paced environment.
Requires direct interaction with customers to resolve end-user problems and complaints, as well as collaborating with software engineers, DBAs, and non-technical teams. Candidate is required to have a high aptitude for explaining complex concepts in layman's terms.
