Description:

Emergent Game Technologies is seeking a technical writer who will consult with our product managers and engineering team and independently create a full suite of end-user documentation for a flexible multi-genre online game server and tool suite. Emergent Game Technologies is creating tools and technology to accelerate development and production phases of game development for studios.

All Emergent documentation is Web-based (HTML, MadCap, RoboHelp, Flare, Adobe PDF, etc.). Creating step-by-step procedural help, conceptual overviews, quick start guides, beta guides, admin guides, installation instructions, and application programming interface (API) documentation may all be required. The ideal candidate is a technically-savvy self starter who thrives in the fast-paced, sometimes unstructured environment of a software startup, who can bring process expertise to the function while producing results with little supervision.

This is full-time position based on site in our Chapel Hill, North Carolina office.

Qualifications:

* At least 4 years of professional technical writing, a talent for simple, succinct communication of complex ideas, and a good understanding of computer programming, software design and development, systems architecture, and other highly technical subjects.
* Proven results. Successful delivery of one or more Web-based help systems (ability to code HTML by hand is required; JavaScript, CSS skills highly desired).
* Successful delivery of a complete suite of user-oriented systems documentation (printed rather than online is acceptable), with an understanding of the critical components to develop and an ability to prioritize them to meet aggressive product delivery schedules.
* The ability to extract and unify information from engineers, system architects, product managers, marketing staff, and others in a collaborative environment.
* The ability to work in a distributed office organization.
* Past experience in and understanding of the unique climate of software startup.
* Proven ability to condense information about technically complex systems with minimal direction.
* The ability to drive the project to success, starting with requirements and schedule, and ending with peer reviews and polish sessions.

Valued Skills:

* Previous programming experience in any language (C++, Java, PERL, Ruby, Python)
* Knowledge of the online games industry, player or industry experience is a plus.
