ShopStyle's catalog sits at the heart of the business. A cloud-based distributed system orchestrates the collection, normalization, and indexing of 18M+ products every day from thousands of sources. The Catalog team is responsible for building and improving that system, as well as innovating new data normalization and enrichment techniques. Ongoing catalog projects include product modeling improvements, improved color and size detection, machine learning-based categorization, real-time product data ingestion, and many more!

As our Lead Catalog Engineer, you will be responsible for architecting improvements to our catalog infrastructure. You will also lead the development efforts of the team, managing the development cycle from requirements to delivery. If you're an experienced backend engineer with leadership skills, and want to own a product catalog platform used by millions of people, then this role is for you.

Our stack:

Hosted on Amazon Web Services and using several AWS offerings
Program mostly in Java, with a bit of Scala and various scripting languages
Microservices with Spring Boot and Docker
Primary Catalog database is MongoDB
Search engine is powered by Lucene and Elasticsearch
Spark for catalog enrichment through machine learning


Responsibilities:

Lead development efforts for our catalog infrastructure, from requirements definition to delivery
Lead the development of new catalog enrichment pipelines
Overhaul our existing infrastructure as we move to a microservices architecture
Mentor more junior members of the development team
Assist project/program/product managers in roadmapping major development efforts


Requirements:

BS in Computer Science or demonstrated sustained success in the software engineering field
5 or more years of Java SE programming experience
Competency to architect, design, and implement backend web services
Excellent data modeling knowledge and experience with both RDBMS and document-oriented databases
Project management experience and interpersonal skills


Nice to have:

Experience as a team lead/manager/mentor
Past catalog engineering experience
Expert knowledge of AWS
Scala/Spark expertise
Working knowledge of Spring/Spring Boot
Experience with MongoDB
Working knowledge of Machine Learning algorithms and techniques
