Position Overview:

Enjoy a good stretch? That's great, because keeping flexible goes with the territory in our applications development department. We have multiple platforms supporting applications that range from small prototypes to large legacy systems (well, legacy to us is only 4 years old!), and lots of data everywhere. Fortunately, almost all our most interesting data are in MySQL databases, so that's what we're looking for -- a MySQL data wrangler!

We will hire the right person to be the data steward of our many databases so he or she can streamline data flow for both operational and ad hoc information requests. We've got data -- people need data -- and you'll make it all happen. We can offer you a dynamic environment where details matter, where you can make a difference in the fitness and health of hundreds of thousands of people, where you materially affect how we make decisions, and where you'll join a team of passionate professionals who take quality and values seriously.

We want to talk with you if:
• You are a MySQL wizard: you have nightmares about unoptimized queries; you eat 100-table schemas for breakfast; explain doesn't hold many surprises for you; as soon as you hear about a new application you start sketching a schema on the nearest napkin; show you two related applications and you're thinking how to simplify things with ETL and ….
• You play well with others: you find that talking with other developers is more stimulating than frustrating -- same with talking with users, and even -- egads - managers. You'll be involved with satisfying requests for data from all types of people, so you have excellent communications skills and can adapt your vocabulary to the other person's comfort zone.
• You are tool oriented -- not only do you know the best tools for managing and accessing data, but if you have to write a program to do something, you'll build it in a way that make reuse and repurposing possible.
• You know more than just MySQL: you can branch and merge in SVN, you use other scripting languages to make things work (Python or Perl), and you know a thing or two about getting Linux to work the way you want.
• You have experience with designing and using OLAP and visualization tools (for example, the Pentaho suite, etc.)
• You have opinions on non-SQL databases we should consider when appropriate.
• You're familiar with the security issues in running database servers and services and you avoid the most prevalent vulnerabilities as a matter of course.
• You don't have to be a DBA-type person -- we're looking for someone to handle the information and the data more than the servers, but if you know a few configuration parameters to make things better, that's good too.
• You are disciplined enough to work efficiently, track your progress, meet your commitments, understand how to spend your time, and be responsible for your part.
• You're excited about making information and knowledge out of data for a wide range of needs from driving business growth to supporting primary and original research.
• You are comfortable (you might say “you prefer…”) an agile environment where proofs of concept, prototypes, and partial requirements abound.
• You understand our need for quality -- you have a demonstrated ability to consistently deliver accurate, efficient, and correct solutions to all problems: the API team is world-class in everything we do.
• You are driven to continually improve the way you do things, and hence the way we do things -- process is good.

Examples of problems you'll be solving:

• Help develop a new way to analyze the heart rate data we've stored for 4 years in order to produce new measures of how fitness changes over time.
• Design the schema for a new application that prototypes the delivery of light physical activities into the office workplace.
• Our resident statistician needs to determine whether the variations we are reporting of PulsePower™ is significant or not and needs the data to support their analysis.
• Our coaches in the field need a new measure of how much each facility gets used; they want to know which centers are growing and in which ways.
• Data warehouse? Cubes? What should we be doing strategically?
